Wine, sea and archeology will delight your stay

The Etruscan Coast: villages, vineyards and spas

Locals and visitors from all over the globe can’t help but appreciate the white-sand beaches and crystalline waters of the Etruscan coast. Known for its Mediterranean feel, this area offers unique Tuscan getaways year round. From Livorno to Piombino, the area is packed with culture, entertainment and stunning natural beauty.

Let’s start from the Wine Trail in Val di Cornia and Bolgheri vineyards for a tour in the enchanting landscapes that lead to Donoratico, where the Sassicaia and Ornellaia DOC wine – among the best in the world – are made.

A joy to the palate, these wines can be served with typical local products: here the cuisine is excellent – both sea and land food: blue fish and palamita, wild boar and the violet artichoke of Venturina.

To fully enjoy the local delights you can not miss a stop in Livorno: between the canals of the Venice District it is impossible not to taste the Cacciucco, the traditional fish soup, one of Tuscany’s most delicious dishes.

If you want to tour in the most interesting villages of this area, Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri offer a glimpse of the woodsy hillsides where the Italian poet Giosuè Carducci found inspiration and wrote a famous poem dedicated to the Avenue of the Cypresses, one of the symbols of the Tuscan countryside.

You should also visit Populonia, known as the ‘Etruscan city’, is situated on a hillside surrounded by the sea. There, you can witness a stunning panorama of the Baratti Gulf. Thanks to the area’s famed Archaeological Park, visitors can follow numerous itineraries spotlighting the mysteries of the Etruscan times.

Those who are looking for a relaxing weekend won’t be disappointed by the thermal baths of Venturina and Calidario. The spas extend across a vast area and consist of just one spa centre (where you can enjoy mud treatments, baths, massages, hydromassages, aerosols as well as beauty treatments) and a large thermal pool.
